Choosing the Perfect Wedding Cake

Nothing says “I Love You” like wedding cake.

Ok, maybe not, but the cake you serve on your big day is an opportunity to not only give your guests something delicious but to provide them a window into your relationship, your humor, your hobbies, or just your sense of style.

With all the being said, whether a wedding cake is high on your list of priorities or the last thing on your mind, my guide to choosing the perfect wedding cake has got you covered!

Choosing Your Wedding Cake

Choose a cake after making your major wedding style decisions

You’ll want a cake that’s fits with the look of your venue, the season, your wedding gown, the flower arrangements and the menu. Arrive at your cake consultation prepared—you don’t need to have a complete sketch in hand, but knowledge of basic terms will make it easier on everyone.

Have a budget in mind

Wedding cake is usually priced by the slice.  It’s easy to be excited by fancy fillings and a multi-flavor cake when you’re making decisions at your tasting, but having a handle on your budget will allow you to prioritize your choices. Generally speaking, while delicious, more flavors equals more money; the more complicated the flavor, the more expensive; and extras such as handmade sugar flowers and fondant icing will add dollars to every slice.

Wedding Cake Topper

Make that topper pop

There are many beautiful and unique ways to top your cake. Show off your personality or give people a glimpse into how you and your significant other met!  Reach out to makers on Etsy or even in your local area to create a wedding topper that is one-of-a-kind and captures you as a couple. Just be sure to be aware of the weight of your topper and check with your bakery before adding anything too heavy to the top to avoid disaster!

Give your cake the spotlight

Your cake will likely be on display before it’s cut and eaten. Using a designated table that fits your decor and allows your cake to be a star! Yes, it’s going to be eaten but it’s also a visual representation of your day and deserves to be photographed and enjoyed by guests before it hits their bellies!

I Lava You Wedding Cake

Eat your cake (no, seriously!)

Couples often don’t get a chance to eat their own wedding cake (besides the bite they sometimes feed each other). Ask your venue to save a piece of cake for you. If you don’t have the time to eat it during your ceremony, indulge with your partner after the wedding is done as a late night snack!

Senior Portrait Photography – Olivia

Senior Portrait | Olivia

The sun was shining the morning of Olivia’s Senior Portrait.  We ventured into Fells Point, Maryland, enjoying the relative quiet amidst the brink walls and paved walkways before the crowds descended to the area to enjoy the warm weather.  The last time I had seen Olivia, she was at my wedding, a sweet 10 year old.  It was hard to believe that the same shy girl was now a young woman, looking forward to going to college.

As she eased into her session, it was fun to see her energy making it’s way to the surface & bubbling over.  As her Senior year winds down, Olivia has an exciting new future to look forward to.  At the time of her session, she was still choosing among the various options available to her for college.  I couldn’t help but smile at this exciting time in her life.  I am sure that whatever choice she makes will bring her many wonderful experiences.

Vacaville Senior Portrait | Teyah

Vacaville Senior Portrait – Teyah

She was quiet and sweet but I sensed an energy and ambition in her just bubbling under the surface.  When I finished Teyah’s Senior Portrait Session, I knew this young woman was going to do big things.  From the look of pride in her mom’s face, I knew she knew that too.

I met Teyah in a hula dance group and became good friends with her mom.   When she told me that she was going to college in Southern California, I knew that a beach session would be the perfect location for her senior portraits.  It wasn’t the warm beaches of our Southern neighbors but it had the elements of home.  It was fitting and a wonderful way to connect the things she loved so much to the future she was walking towards.

Sacramento Engagement Photography | Felice + Reggie

I am so blessed to have been a part of so many milestones with the Justo family.  From family portraits to weddings, I’ve been able to grow with and experience the milestones of the family.  This is why I was so touched, once again, to be able to photograph Reggie’s engagement to his lovely fiance, Felice.

We hit the streets of Sacramento for a sunny, fun-filled urban session.  Having lived in Sacramento for most of their lives and beginning their journey in “The City of Trees”, it only made sense for us to take their engagement photos here.

San Francisco Engagement Photographer – Katie + CJ

San Francisco Engagement Session: Katie + CJ

Their friends knew they were meant for each other so Katie & CJ were brought together. They proved their friends right. Together they built a life together filled with dates to the movies, exploring the town and simply embracing the love they have for one another.

This love was abundantly clear as they strolled along Baker Beach in San Francisco on a brisk winter afternoon.  As the cool breeze swept across the beach, he drew her into his warmth and brushed the hair from her face. She shined from within, displaying a joy and happiness that needed no coaxing.

Our session moved on to downtown San Francisco, where we enjoyed the lights at twilight.  One of the things Katie loves about CJ is his ability to share and express his love.  He did just that during our session.  I loved being able to witness the love they share between each other.
